Powering the Good Life: How MPower is leading the charge toward a safer, sustainable, and greener future

Days before Christmas 2021, Typhoon Odette (International name Rai) wreaked havoc, leaving many areas of Visayas and Mindanao reeling in the aftermath. Communities evacuated and braced themselves for the worst, as this typhoon was anticipated to be as strong as the catastrophic Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.,Extreme weather events in the Philippines, likely brought about by climate change, have become increasingly frequent in recent years. All areas in the country have gotten warmer, with PAGASA observing more hot days and less cool nights all year round in 2022. Tropical storms have also brought more rainfall compared to storms in the previous 50 years. Minimizing climate change’s effects will require collective effort that brings together individuals, communities, industries, and government agencies.,The private sector plays a crucial role in this endeavor. The United States Environmental Protection Agency claims that 64% of greenhouse gasses worldwide are produced by industrial processes.,MPower, the Local Retail Electricity Supplier of MERALCO, recognizes its responsibility to help curb dangerous emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change by working hand-in-hand with its partners and Filipino communities.,In 2015, MPower, together with the One Meralco Foundation, launched CommuniTrees, an annual tree planting activity that engages business partners and local communities as the flagship program of its corporate social responsibility initiative. This is MPower’s way of giving back to Filipinos through environmental protection and conservation, including highly urbanized areas.,In celebration of their 9th year in the industry, CommuniTrees has planted 9000+ local and indigenous trees and the seeds of hope in various places around the country in partnership with One For Trees’ mission to plant and nurture 3 million seedlings by 2025. MPower has been supported by more than 600+ volunteers from new and recurring partner companies every year since the program’s launch. CommuniTrees is aligned with MPower and The Meralco group’s campaign to embed sustainability into every aspect of their operations.,Apart from greening efforts, MPower is also committed to advancing the United Nations global goals by providing affordable and clean energy options, promoting responsible consumption and production, and pursuing climate action. For these reasons, MPower’s sustainability agenda is anchored on 4 core pillars: Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity. These four pillars of sustainability helped shape MPower’s corporate social responsibility programs, and brought to light another, equally important pillar: Partnership.,“Our customers and partners have been the integral part of our business,” says Mr. Roberto R. Almazora, Senior Vice President and Head of MPower. “Building a strong relationship outside our contractual obligations has always been one of our priorities. As we grow together, we empower our customers and give back to the communities. Everyone is connected, everyone is responsible, and everyone must do their part to achieve a better, sustainable future.”,CommuniTrees is just one of MPower’s many programs under its sustainability agenda. It also launched the Kinder Classroom project in 2015 through close collaboration with clients and partner businesses. The project has built 9 fully furnished classrooms with audio-visual learning materials for public schools across the country, particularly in Cavite, Malabon, Laguna, and Bulacan.,MPower has also installed solar panels in far-flung public schools outside of the power grid. These efforts have benefited more than 2,468 pupils since the project’s launch making quality education more accessible to Filipino youth.,In lieu of the Kinder Classroom Project, MPower launched the Back-to-School Donation Drive in 2020, making in-kind materials like printers, inks, boxes of paper, hard drives, and PPEs available to faculty and students of different grade levels as they adapt to their new normal of modular education.,Through these efforts, MPower fulfills their commitment to the broader Filipino community setting a prime example for businesses across different sectors in mitigating climate change. Last December, their sustainability efforts were highly recognized by Zuellig Pharma Corporation’s 2022 Supplier Sustainability Awards with the Gold Award for their sustainability impact, innovation, insights, and initiative — a testament that MPower not only powers the nation, but empowers Filipinos to build a safer, sustainable, and greener future together.
